Amazon Study I

My work is always inspired by nature, but a few years ago I began a series of paintings and monotypes (Terra Infirma) dedicated to honoring environmentally-challenged regions of the planet. This piece is one of several in homage to the Amazon rainforest, whose devastation by fire is depriving the planet of a much-needed natural source of climate protection.

  • Monotype: one-of-a-kind painting created on plexiglass then run through a press to make an impression onto archival printing paper
  • Colors: Black, gray, red, orange, and white
  • Image size is 10″ x 10″, on BFK Rives archival paper
  • Professionally framed in black wood

My work is an abstract exploration of nature, and the dialog between geometry and organic shapes and textures. Monotypes give me an opportunity to play with these dancing forms and colors—plus the white space provided by the paper—allowing the ink to flow as it wants to, then creating lines and edges for contrast. The diptych series, of which this is one, was inspired by a residency in County Kerry, Ireland, where I was deeply moved by both the lushness of the vegetation and the vast horizontality of the landscape.

  • Monotype: one-of-a-kind painting created on plexiglass then run through a press to make an impression onto archival printing paper
  • Diptych: two plates were worked on at once and placed side by side on the paper to be printed
  • Colors: yellow-green, orange, rust, black and white
  • Image size is 6″ x 21″ on 22″ x 30″ BFK Rives archival paper

Corona Collage II

During Covid, I used the time to create a series of collages using only vertical strips cut from less successful monotypes created in the past. These served to express my interest in organic shapes in dialog with straight edges. And to improve on the compositions for a stronger, more dynamic effect. My use of color in all of my work is a joyful celebration of nature, and an homage to environmentally challenged regions of our beloved planet. Each piece is titled, signed and dated in pencil, on the front just below the artwork’s edge (not shown in image).

  • Collage made from vertical strips of one-of-a-kind monotypes printed on BFK Rives archival paper and glued together onto another sheet of BFK rives
  • Multicolored
  • Professionally framed in black wood
  • 14″ x 15″

During Covid, I was not allowed in to the printmaking studio, so i spent some time combining less-than successful monotypes from my flat files, creating collages. The process afforded me the chance to combine organic textures and shapes with cut straight lines for contrast, and to create dynamic compositions with an optimistic, vertical thrust, —an expression of hope for a better future.

  • Monotype collage created by slicing several other monotypes and combining them, then mounting them on BFK Rives archival paper
  • Colors: blue, yellow, green, orange, black and white
  • Image size is 10″ x10″
  • Will be mailed in an acid-free glassine sleeve with cardboard protection

Evening, Ballinskelligs

While on an artists’ residency in County Kerry, Ireland, this stunning, expansive horizon was the view from my cottage. It also bore a resemblance to the gorgeous views of the Ashokan Reservoir right in my neighborhood back at home. When I returned to the printmaking studio I was inspired by the vast horizontality of the landscape in Ireland to embark on a series of diptychs, of which this is one.

  • Monotype: one-of-a-kind painting created on plexiglass then run through a press to make an impression onto archival printing paper.
  • Diptych: two plates were worked on at once and placed side by side on the paper to be printed.

Field Geometry

My work is an abstract exploration of the colors found in nature, and the dialog between geometric and organic shapes. I explored the diptych format in a series of monotypes after a residency in Ireland inspired me—with the vast horizontality of its landscape combined with the lushness of the vegetation. This piece has a horizontal rhythm that contrasts with the dancing vertical forms suggestive of grasses along a landscape.

  • Diptych: two plates were worked on at once and placed side by side on the paper to be printed

  • Image size is 6″ x 21″ on BFK Rives archival paper
  • Framed at 19″ x 25″ in black wood

Forest Vibrations/Diptych

My work is an abstract exploration of the colors found in nature, and the dialog between geometry and organic shapes. The diptych format, which i have explored in a series of monotypes (inspired by a residency in Ireland), has a horizontal rhythm that in this case seemed to have echoes in sound vibrations as well as in the dancing vertical forms of trees and grasses along a landscape.

  • Monotype: one-of-a-kind painting created on plexiglass then run through a press to make an impression onto archival printing paper
  • Diptych: two plates were worked on at once and placed side by side on the paper to be printed

Hedgerow Study II

My work is an abstract exploration of the textures and colors found in nature. The Hedgerow series was created in 2016/7 and expressed my love of the wild organic shapes and textures that, combined with the lines and geometry of branches, are found along every road-side and wild garden hedge. I live in a rural part of Ulster County and am fortunate to find inspiration every day.
