Based on a photograph I took of stairs at UCCC (now SUNY Ulster), this painting has had a number of interpretations. One of my deeply religious Christian friends saw it as a spiritual expression of ascent to Heaven. Another friend, who lived near the World Trade Center, was sure it depicted the only staircase at the Center which survived the 9/11 attack, and down which many people descended to safety.
